A screen privacy filter sized for a 14.1-inch laptop display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, designed to narrow the screen's usable viewing angle so that only the person sitting directly in front of the laptop can read what's on screen, anyone looking from the side, on a plane, train, or in an open-plan office, sees a darkened or blacked-out display instead of the actual content. Targus's privacy filters use a micro-louvre film, essentially thousands of tiny vertical blinds moulded into the material, to achieve this rather than a simple tint, and typically narrow the readable angle to roughly 30 degrees either side of centre. It attaches over the existing screen, typically with adhesive tabs or a frame depending on the exact mounting kit included, and being a physical filter it works regardless of the laptop's operating system. It also functions as a basic screen protector against scratches and dust while fitted.
