Synology 12-Bay Enterprise Desktop NAS; expandable up to 36 bays with expansion units. Replacing DS3617xsII
This is a Synology 12-bay enterprise desktop NAS positioned as the direct successor to the DS3617xsII, part of Synology's high-end xs+ enterprise storage line built for demanding business environments — large-scale file services, virtualization storage, backup targets, and applications needing consistent high IOPS. The current-generation replacement for this model line is the DS3622xs+, which keeps the same 12-bay hot-swappable drive layout and overall chassis approach as the DS3617xsII but updates the internals with a more modern Intel Xeon D-1531 six-core processor (2.2GHz base / 2.7GHz turbo) and adds dual 10GbE (10GBASE-T) network ports as standard, addressing the older model's networking bottleneck.
Like its predecessor, the unit is expandable well beyond its own 12 bays — connecting two Synology DX1215 expansion units (12 bays each) over the enclosure's expansion ports brings total raw capacity up to 36 drive bays from a single controller, which is exactly the expansion path referenced in this product's own catalog description. This makes it suitable for growing storage environments where capacity needs to scale well past what fits in the desktop chassis alone, without needing a second independent NAS and the added management overhead that comes with it. It runs Synology's DSM operating system, giving access to the full enterprise feature set — Btrfs file system with snapshots, Synology High Availability clustering, Virtual Machine Manager, and Synology's business backup/replication suite — backed by a standard 5-year warranty on this product line.
