The "HX" designation on the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus identifies it as Intel's unlocked, desktop-derived high-performance mobile silicon rather than the more power-efficient standard-voltage H-series chips — HX-class CPUs are built for maximum sustained multi-core performance in laptops with the cooling capacity to support it, which the ROG Strix chassis is specifically designed around. Paired with an RTX 5070, this is a genuinely high-performance gaming laptop capable of running current AAA titles at high settings with ray tracing and DLSS, while SO-DIMM (rather than soldered) memory means the RAM can potentially be upgraded later, a detail power users and gamers looking at long-term upgradeability tend to specifically look for versus laptops with soldered-in memory. The ROG Strix chassis also typically includes a more comprehensive port selection than the slimmer Zephyrus line, since the extra internal volume leaves room for full-size HDMI, additional USB-A ports and a headphone jack without needing dongles.
