The Smart Tank line is HP's answer to the broader refillable-tank inkjet category (competing directly with Epson's EcoTank line), aimed at homes and small offices doing enough regular printing that the lower running cost of bulk ink genuinely pays off over cartridge-based alternatives. As a CPO (certified pre-owned) unit, it has been previously used, then inspected, tested, and refurbished to a working, warrantied condition before resale, offering the Smart Tank system's long-term running-cost benefit at a lower upfront cost than buying new. Each tank typically holds enough ink for many months of typical home or small-office printing before a refill is needed, and HP sells the refill bottles separately at a materially lower cost per page than an equivalent cartridge-based printer.
