Garmin Fantom Dome 18x, Black
The Garmin GMR Fantom 18x is an 18-inch solid-state dome radar for boats that want strong target detection without a large open-array antenna. It uses Garmin's solid-state pulse compression technology rather than an older magnetron design, giving fast warm-up (essentially instant-on, with a low-power timed transmit mode available to save power at anchor) and safer, lower-emission operation at close range. This listing is the black-housing colour option -- Garmin also sells the identical 18x dome in white for boats where a lighter-coloured radome suits the hull/hardtop colour scheme better.
Fantom's headline feature is MotionScope, Garmin's Doppler-based technology that automatically colour-codes moving targets on screen (e.g. approaching versus receding vessels) so a genuine collision-risk contact stands out instantly from stationary land and clutter returns. The 18x model puts out 50 watts of transmit power with up to 48 nautical miles of detection range, and a fast 60 RPM rotation speed for a quicker screen refresh that keeps up with fast-moving targets, backed by a 5.2-degree horizontal and 25-degree vertical beam width. It's plug-and-play compatible with Garmin's GPSMAP 7x2, 7x3, 9x2, 9x3, 10x2, 12x2, 12x3, 7400, 7600 and 8000-series chartplotters, connecting over the Garmin Marine Network for straightforward installation without a separate radar processor to wire in.
