Garmin GMR 18 xHD3 Dome

Garmin GMR 18 xHD3 Dome

The Garmin GMR 18 xHD3 is an 18-inch dome (radome) marine radar, a self-contained rotating radar antenna designed for boats that want the compact, enclosed dome form factor over an open-array antenna — better suited to smaller flybridge and sailboat mast mounting where an open array's larger swing radius isn't practical. It outputs 4kW of transmit power with a maximum range of 48 nautical miles, giving genuine long-range vessel/weather/landmass detection for coastal cruising and offshore passages, not just close-range collision avoidance.

More Info

The dome measures roughly 20 x 9.8 inches and weighs 7.0kg, is IPX7 water-resistant, and spins at up to 60 RPM for fast target refresh. Beamwidth is 5.2° horizontal by 25° vertical, with a minimum detection range down to about 20 metres for tracking close-in targets like other vessels in a marina or channel. Runs on an 11-32V DC supply, drawing around 15W on standby and roughly 40W while transmitting in normal mode. Feature set includes Garmin's scan-averaging technology for cleaner target returns, improved target-size processing, split-screen dual-range display (viewing two radar ranges simultaneously), and bird detection mode for spotting feeding bird activity that often indicates baitfish and gamefish below. The dome-drive motor is engineered to run quietly compared to older radar designs.
