Garmin GMR Fantom 254, Black

The Garmin GMR Fantom 254 is a solid-state, Doppler open-array marine radar rated at 250W of transmit power, fitted here with a black-finished pedestal housing with a 4-foot open-array antenna. It uses Garmin's MotionScope technology, which highlights moving targets - other vessels, weather cells, or wildlife - in a distinct colour on screen so they stand out immediately from the surrounding clutter of stationary land and sea returns, and Pulse Compression technology that concentrates the radar's transmitted energy for sharper, higher-resolution target imaging at both short and long range.
Being solid-state rather than magnetron-based, it turns on instantly with no warm-up period, runs silently, and draws meaningfully less power than an equivalent traditional radar - practical benefits for a unit that a skipper wants switched on and off frequently rather than left running continuously. It can detect targets from as close as 20 feet out to 20ft to 96 nautical miles, and supports MARPA (Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) target tracking so the system can automatically track and flag other vessels' course and speed for collision avoidance. Rotation speed switches between 24 RPM for lower power draw during routine cruising and 48 RPM for faster screen redraw when scanning for fast-moving targets or working in a busy anchorage. It's designed to network with a compatible Garmin chartplotter for display and control rather than operating as a standalone unit.
