Garmin GPSMAP 8412

The Garmin GPSMAP 8412 is a 12-inch non-sonar multifunction display from Garmin's 8400 series, one step down from the 8600 series in overall processing headroom but sharing the same core touchscreen-plus-physical-control interface. Unlike the plain-touchscreen 8600-series units, the 8400 series retains a 360-degree joystick with a push-to-select rotary knob alongside the touchscreen, giving a helmsman a way to work the menus and charts by feel in rough conditions or wet-gloved hands where a touchscreen alone can be unreliable. This unit ships with Garmin's Worldwide Basemap rather than a regional Navionics+ chart pack, so it's usable globally out of the box but benefits from an added chart card for detailed coastal/inland cartography in a specific cruising area.
The 12-inch Full HD IPS display is built for sunlight readability and wide viewing angles, even through polarized sunglasses at the helm. SailAssist gives racers pre-start line data and key sailing instrumentation, while SmartMode station controls let the same one-touch layout be recalled instantly at multiple helm stations on a larger boat. Networking covers NMEA 2000 and the Garmin Marine Network for chartplotter/instrument data sharing, plus built-in ANT and Wi-Fi for wireless accessories and the ActiveCaptain app. As a non-sonar unit it needs a companion Garmin or Airmar transducer and a sounder module (such as the GSD 28 in this same lineup) added to the network for fishfinding -- it doesn't include or drive sonar on its own.
