Garmin Max-Kit (JL Audio measurement system)
The JL Audio MAX Audio Measurement System, sold under Garmin's marine catalogue as the Max-Kit, is a professional five-microphone audio analysis rig used to measure and tune installed sound systems rather than a speaker or amplifier itself. It's built by JL Audio specifically to work with its own VXi and MVi series marine amplifiers, giving a single computer running JL Audio's TüN 4 software full access to onboard DSP controls alongside the live measurement data -- so an installer tunes the amp's EQ, crossovers and time alignment against real, measured in-room (or in-cockpit) response rather than guesswork. It has broader use across home, car, marine and professional audio work generally, not only JL/Garmin systems.
On a boat it's used to evaluate one zone at a time -- cockpit, helm, cabin, tower -- or several zones together, checking frequency response and output level so a multi-zone marine audio system actually sounds balanced from each seating position rather than only near the speakers. The kit supports 5-microphone averaged single-FFT measurements (level, frequency response, RTA/spectrograph) as well as dual-FFT measurements of up to five simultaneous transfer functions, reporting magnitude, phase, impulse response/delay and coherence -- useful for catching wiring, phase or placement problems a basic SPL meter would miss. It also accepts an input test signal and can play back WAV files for repeatable A/B testing. Every microphone, mount, cable and the control unit itself packs into a single lockable, water-resistant hard case for use dockside or on the water.
