It's aimed at small-to-medium business network storage: centralised file sharing, a backup target for endpoint and server backups, Btrfs-based snapshot protection, and light virtualisation or Docker container hosting via DSM's package centre. Four Gigabit Ethernet ports support link aggregation or failover for either extra throughput or network redundancy, two USB 3.2 ports and one eSATA port allow direct-attached backup drives or an external expansion chassis, and the unit's own bay count can be grown from 8 to 12 drives with a compatible RX-series expansion unit rather than requiring a full replacement as storage needs grow. Synology's RS1221+ generation of this platform is also available with a redundant dual-PSU RP variant for uptime-critical deployments, and is rated for sequential read speeds of roughly 2,315MB/s in an optimised RAID configuration.
