The RCT HD-250U3 is an external enclosure that turns a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive or SSD into portable USB 3.0 storage. It is sold empty (no drive included), so it is typically used to reuse the drive from an old or upgraded laptop, to recover data from a laptop drive, or to make a pocket-sized backup or transfer drive from a spare SSD. The drive slides into the slim black case and connects to the internal SATA connector; the enclosure then plugs into a computer's USB port through a USB 3.0 Micro-B socket on the end of the case. USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) gives much faster transfers than USB 2.0, and the enclosure also works on older USB 2.0 ports at the slower speed. Like most drive enclosures of this type it is plug-and-play on current Windows and macOS systems, although a brand-new drive will need to be partitioned and formatted before first use. The case has a brushed black finish with an RCT logo. Rectron (RCT's South African distributor) lists it under part number 24-110053-00G.
